Pastor: Gary Firster
Gary Firster has been serving this church as lead pastor since December 5, 2005. As the son of an American Baptist pastor, he grew up in Philadelphia and Cape May, NJ. He proclaimed belief and faith in Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior at age eight and was baptized one day before his ninth birthday. It was that same year that he felt the call to fulltime pastoral ministry. His educational preparation for this call began in fourth grade as he attended Hebrew School, after public school, learning Hebrew with Jewish friends. This lasted for five years, during which time he received an “honorary” Bar Mitzvah. His education continued after high school at Wheaton College and Northern Baptist Theological Seminary in Illinois and Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary just outside Philadelphia. He was ordained in 1983 in Pennsauken, NJ.
He pastored an American Baptist church in Schenectady, NY, was a family therapist for several agencies in NY and PA, the director of several counseling agencies in PA and the Associate Pastor of a United Methodist Church in Dover, PA.He is married to Linda and between them they have seven children along with a couple grandchildren and counting.
Theologically he is a conservative evangelical who has a heart for reaching those in the community for Jesus Christ. His desire is to continue to help this church through his Biblical preaching and teaching, vision casting and example, to be a Missional Church.
Pastor Dave Withers is married with three children and two grandchildren (soon to be three). After 32 years of service with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania he retired and was called into Christian ministry service where he received certification as a Lay Minister. He has served as interim pastor, first as chaplain at the Penn National Racetrack, then at Colonial Park Community Baptist Church where he continues as Associate Pastor. His faith journey from darkness into the loving relationship of the Light of the World, Jesus Christ, is best summed up in this excerpt from a poem by M. L. Haskins:
“Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown. And he replied: ‘Go out into the darkness and put your hand into the hand of God. That shall be to you better than a light and safer than a known way.” So I went forth, and finding the hand of God, trod gladly into the night and he led me towards the hills and the breaking of day in the lone East.”
