A weekly look back and look forward from Pastor Wayne
Looking Back: This past Sunday under the theme “watch out for the little foxes,” we considered the warnings from Hebrews 3:7-11. Warnings are so important in our lives. From the warning lights on the dashboard of our cars to the sirens that alert us to danger, we are grateful for the instruments used to get our attention. God’s Word also has warning lights. How about satisfaction that no longer comes alone from the Savior, or being blinded the big picture of what God is up to both in our lives and in our world? The one major issue that Hebrews 3:10-11 point out is missing out on God’s rest. For ancient Israel this involved not being able to enter the promised land. For us, its’ missing out on the place where we are secure in Christ, that our satisfaction truly comes from Jesus! As you continue to reflect on last week’s message, ask yourself – is my satisfaction truly in Jesus?
Looking Ahead:
Moving forward this coming Sunday we will consider Hebrews 3:12-19. I’ve titled the message – “Encouragement, perseverance, and a warning.” Honestly, it may feel a bit repetitive. However, repetition is critical to how we learn. A language, bible verses, names, you name it, we learn by constant repetition. We go over it repeatedly. I trust you can relate. The Hebrew writer is convinced that his readers need regular reminders to encourage each other. Why? Because encouraging one another is not natural. And then there’s the matter of not giving up. Ever felt like giving up – name it, your marriage, your kids, your job – how about the Christian life? Hebrews is calling us to preserve. And then the warning comes from the experience of Israel. They rebelled in wilderness and did not enter the promised land. We can do the same! Let’s not! See you Sunday!
Looking Beyond: Next Sunday Holy Week begins with Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Resurrection Sunday. I plan on sharing an “Easter” series around the significance and importance of Jerusalem. The first message is titled, “Why Jerusalem – Part I – Weeping over the City.” Luke 19:28-44.
